During this time of the year, I am usually on an emotional roller coaster. At times, I am very thankful, content and humbled. Other times, I am very low, depressed, needy, and selfish. Being away from my family members during the holidays is hard. I've been doing this for quite some time though. After college I moved to Atlanta and was away for 7 years. Now, it is a little different. I have a daughter who I wish was around her grandparents and cousins, and I have a husband who I wish could lounge around with my father and watch basketball. It's not just me anymore.
The past few weeks I found myself in a very bad state of mind emotionally, and needed something to get me out of this funk. Did you know that women who suffer from PCOS are more likely to develop anxiety and depression?
"Up to two in 10 women in the U.S. have PCOS, and about 60% of them also show symptoms of anxiety, depression, or another mental illness. Although we don't know what causes PCOS, we do know that it involves our hormones being out of whack and causing things such as intense pelvic pain, facial hair, and infertility." You can read more about that here.
I don't like taking medication, and I have never been on anti-depressants. So I wanted to find a remedy to shake this demon off me! Little did I know, the BEST natural anti-depressant was sitting on top of my refrigerator!
But before I get to that, I want to tell you everything I did to help pull myself out of this dreadful negative bubble.
Thank goodness I let my husband buy those expensive speakers lol! I cranked up the volume and put on my favorite jams from when I was younger...I danced alone, I danced with my daughter, I danced with my dog, and I danced with my hubs. I danced until I was sweating, and my heart was beating heavy out of my chest! I danced until I laughed. I danced until I was happy.
I stopped drinking alcohol!
Alcohol may seem like it's making you feel better, but it is actually a depressant itself. The temporary feeling that alcohol gives you will only make you feel worse in return. Emotions and situations are intensified while you are under the influence, and can force you to make some pretty bad decisions. You lose all inhibitions when you are drunk, making it very difficult to think rationally. I find it best to face your feelings head on, and sober no matter how painful it may be.
I told my best friend!
Depression can isolate you, and in turn, that isolation can dig you into a deeper hole. I opened up to my best friend about my feelings, and now I'm opening up to all of you as well. It can be a very hard hump to push through, but being open and honest about your feelings and talking about them is extremely therapeutic! Have you ever heard that saying, "Crying is like taking your soul to the laundromat"....it's true! Allow someone you trust to help you and become an outlet for your feelings. It really helps.
I ate right!
When you're feeling down in the dumps, some (including me) turn to food as comfort. This creates a dysfunctional relationship between you and food and can cause you to spiral out of control bringing even more problems into your life. Over-eating during depression is a vicious cycle that you don't even want to start. Food is our medicine. I knew I wanted to get out of this funk, so I made sure I ate real, whole foods plentiful in natural vitamins and nutrients! Of course, with a little chocolate here and there ;-)
I drank WHEATGRASS!
Did you know that your Fat Diminisher Drink will help improve your mood and relieve symptoms of depression? I didn't until now. And I am a witness to it's power! Organic wheatgrass is a powerful natural remedy for oxygenating the blood, reducing toxins, and clearing your system while replenishing essential nutrients. The chlorophyll present in wheatgrass helps promote a balanced system to naturally reduce negative emotions. Many nutrition counselors use wheatgrass to treat anxiety and depression because the nutrient-dense grasses provide the building blocks to aid your body in producing its own serotonin (a hormone that contributes to your feelings of well-being and happiness).
In The Fat Diminisher System, wheatgrass plays a very important role in your health and daily life. While following the program, you will consume it every day! That means you are constantly fighting off the negative demons who can sometimes creep into your life!
I hope some of my very simple steps can help you or a friend who may be suffering from depression. Please do not take depression lightly, and if you or anyone you know is suffering from depression and you believe you are a harm to yourself or others, please contact one of these numbers immediately:
